Drivers Licence Medical Assessment
Driver licence medical assessments are conducted by health care professionals to ensure drivers are medically fit to drive safely. The standards are set out by government authorities for your safety as well as that of other road users. This assessment includes physical assessments, psychological assessments, cognitive assessments, or could be all. Assessing standards could be different for private driver's licence and commercial or heavy vehicle driver's licence.
Medical conditions
Drivers must notify transport and main roads if they have a long-term or permanent medical condition. It is a legal requirement to notify the authority. Failure to notify can result in fines and cancellation of the driver’s licence.
As per the medical condition, drivers need to have a periodical medical assessment as advised by the authority/ guidelines.
Common conditions to notify included but are not limited to are:
Diabetes mellitus
Sleep disorders
Neurological conditions - epilepsy, strokes
Psychological conditions - psychosis, schizophrenia
Cardiovascular conditions
Dementia
Visual and hearing impairment
Blackouts
Your GP can perform a drivers licence medical assessment. If necessary, you will be referred to a specialist’s medical opinion or for an occupational medical assessment.
Age 75 years and over
Drivers aged 75 and over are recommended for an annual medical assessment. This involves a comprehensive medical assessment including vision, hearing, blood pressure, heart rate, and physical and mental health assessments. If necessary, you will be advised to see an optometrist to check your eyes.
We can do your Drivers licence paperwork at the same time as you come in for the annual health assessment, to save you cost and time.
